Reading this article prompted me to reflect on how lucky I am to have such a supportive dad who encouraged me to pursue a career of my choice, and was happy to steer me in the direction of science and technology.
I can't really remember many of my [female] friends in elementary school having dads who did a lot of 'sciencey' things with them. My dad sat through countless Knowledge Network programs on the big bang and black holes with me, took me on paleontological digs, helped me with my math homework, and was happy to have lengthy discussions on the time-space continuum with me, usually after a thought-provoking episode of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'. We were one of the first families I knew who had a home computer (8mb of RAM running DOS, oh yeah!) and had many marine biology lessons during summer vacations spent fishing. All that in addition to those wonderful classic sci-fi novels he recommended (and still does!).
Now here I am with my B.Sc, on the eve of my Master's thesis defense, thinking about how much I appreciate him. So here's to you Dad! Happy Father's Day.
